EXPERIENCE TYPE: Farm Day
From Aristotle’s scriptures and Greek mythology is it obvious that Greece has a long standing tradition & history of beekeeping.
Greece holds the first place position in worldwide honey classifications.
Our farm and village has numerous citrus trees, organic agriculture and is rich in flora. The nearby forests of Mt Taygetos allow the bees to create varieties of honey that are rich in nutrients with different appearances, tastes and aromas. Depending on the season & which flowers are in bloom characterizes the quality and type of honey: wild flowers, fir, pine, arbutus, eucalyptus, orange and thyme.
We’ll pick you up from our designated meeting point and take you to visit our small bee unit on the mountainous area near our farm just outside of Kalamata, where we’ll introduce you to the magical world of bees and beekeeping. After a small informative briefing we will put on the protective uniforms and hike into the natural environment of the bees, with the amazing aromas of the surrounding wild flowers and herbs.
You will learn about the species, the history, the anatomy, the reproduction and the highly organized social structure of the bees. You will also find out how to recognize the Queen, the drones and the worker bees. We will see how the bees collect pollen from flowers and how they convert it into fresh honey and store it inside the beehive. You will learn all about the process for harvesting honey, royal jelly & wax from beehives.
After this unique experience we will walk back to our farm and there we will taste several different types of honey in order to learn how to distinguish between them. You will learn about honey products, such as soap & body creams. Finally, you can taste this ancient Greek ambrosia in the form of a delicious traditional Greek dessert, created using pure farm honey as the main ingredient together with strained yoghurt with honey, organic fruits from our farm & wild berries. You will drink nectar in the form of rakomelo, or herbal tea from Mt. Taygetos with honey. A tasteful traditional lunch with salads topped with honey made dressings, delicatessen and wine follows.
Full of experiences and knowledge we will return you to the meeting point.
